Estate Fencing

Fortify specialise in supplying and installing the highest quality traditional estate fencing. Our experienced and skilled team of fencers and gaters have installed fencing at many notable country houses and homes, from Northumberland to our home county of Hampshire.

With high quality materials and expert installation, estate fencing will gracefully enhance any landscape or garden. It can frame and provide structure to its surroundings but in a manner that is never overbearing or impeding of views and vistas. It has many practical qualities as well: it is robust enough to restrain a herd of Highland cattle, and subtle enough to keep pets in. Estate fencing is an investment which elevates and adds value to a property. It is a very cost-effective type of fencing, a good timber fence will cost roughly half that of a five rail estate fence and it will last between 15 and 25 years and will therefore need to be replaced several times during the life of an estate fence.

Estate fencing has become increasingly popular and as a result, there are now several different types, so it is important to be aware of this to ensure you are comparing like with like. Our estate fencing is known as a ‘continuous weld system’ because it has no visible joints or connections because the fence is entirely welded together. In recent years we have seen estate fencing with various innovations, such as prefabricated panels that are bolted or clipped together. These new types of fencing sought really to introduce estate fencing to a more DIY and suburban audience, and these fences require less skill and little specialist machinery to install. Besides the shared name they are not a comparable product and are not fit for the traditional purposes that estate fencing has always been used for, such as containing livestock. They do not come close to replicating the smooth and beautiful flowing fence lines, and they do not have the same strength and durability of our estate fencing. Where these alternative types tend to struggle is also where our continuous weld fencing particularly excels and looks most impressive and befitting; across undulating ground, on long stretches along entrances and drives, or when performing sweeping bends around features such as historic trees, lakes and ponds.

Fortify’s continuous weld fencing is made from the highest-grade steel. Our posts are longer, thicker and stronger than most. The posts are driven nearly a metre into the ground at one metre intervals, they are then joined by six-metre-long rails which are staggered like brickwork to ensure that each rail ends on a different post. Once the fence is standing and we have ensured it flows beautifully, every joint is welded so that each rail is attached to every post. These methods take time and are the expertise of master fencers, but alongside the superior materials used, they give our fencing its imperious strength. Strength is hugely important because the integrity of a fence is challenged more than one might think, throughout the year our seasonal weather variations cause the fence to continually expand and contract, so over time nature will find and expose any weakness.

Another perk of this quality of fence is that you do not have to paint it. Ultimately, to paint or not to paint is purely an aesthetic decision; the fence will look spectacular for many generations regardless. We can paint your fence whatever colour you desire, or you can leave nature to take its course and witness the hue of the metal evolve into a fiery copper tone before some months later arriving at its eventual tone - a beautiful rich and dark Corten steel rust colour, which blends harmoniously with its surroundings. We only paint the fence once it is fully installed and welded to achieve the perfect finish.
